Climate-related insecurity differs for men, women and gender minorities. Review articles link gender-based violence (GBV) with extreme weather events, exacerbated by existing structural vulnerabilities and gender power dynamics. However, the causality between extreme weather events and GBV are poorly understood. New data collection is needed to understand local drivers of GBV. Governments should strive to realize the United Nations (UN) Women, Peace and Security (WPS) commitments by ensuring that their climate change adaptation efforts are empirically supported and take into account gendered dynamics. Implementing gender-sensitive disaster relief can be a practical first step.
